Romantic Comedy - Iconography

Iconography is the visual clues that show the audience what genre the film belongs to. This could be identified through the setting, props or costumes. 

Typically in romantic comedies the setting is always a  nice romantic place.

A few examples of typical romantic comedy settings are:

The Eiffel Tower, because it's known for being a romantic place. 

Romantic holiday destinations with stunning scenery.

Fancy restaurants are typically linked to the romantic comedy genre. 

Other elements of romantic comedy iconography is props. Props are important, because they help set the tone for the film.

A few examples of props that could be seen in romantic comedies are:

Flowers are typically used in romantic comedies as a symbol of love which is a massive element of the genre. 

A box of chocolates is a common prop used in romantic comedies, because it is considered a romantic gesture which would help the audience identify that the film belongs to the romantic comedy genre. 

Engagement rings are commonly used in romantic comedies, because they symbolise romance and love. 

Another aspect of iconography is the costumes. In romantic comedies the characters generally wear normal clothing that the audience would wear, so that the audience could relate to the characters better. Sometimes the characters can be seen wearing fancy attire when attending events.

In romantic comedies the characters mostly wear casual clothing so that the audience can relate more to the film, because the characters are supposed to represent typical people in society. 

Wedding dresses symbolise love, therefore they are used in the romantic comedy genre.
