Romantic Comedy - Narrative Structure

Although there are many different types of romantic comedies, they all follow a similar narrative structure.

A typical narrative structure for a romantic comedy is:

First the 2 protagonists are introduced (most of the time this is done so separately) so that the audience can get a sense of their personality traits and character types. 



The characters then meet in what is known as a 'meet cute'. Sometimes the characters despise each other at first, however sometimes they form an instant connection. 



We then start to see the two protagonists fall in love and build a romantic connection.



The film then takes a turn when the protagonists are then faced with an obstacle. This is usually an argument that causes them to part ways.



The couple then part ways temporarily due to them 'breaking up'.


We then see the couple reunite and resolve their issues and live happily ever after...
